Moving house is one of life's most stressful events β but with a little planning, moving day can actually be quite exciting. Here are our favourite tips from 12+ years of helping Nottingham families move.
Saturday slots fill up weeks in advance, particularly in summer. Book your removal company as soon as you have an expected moving date β even if the exact date changes, you can usually rearrange.
Moving is the perfect opportunity to clear out everything you no longer need. Sell, donate or arrange a clearance for items you are not taking β the less you move, the quicker and cheaper the job.
Pack one clearly labelled box with everything you will need on the day and the first night: kettle, mugs, phone charger, toilet paper, a change of clothes and any medications. Keep this with you β not in the van.
Clear labelling makes unpacking so much faster. Write the destination room on the top and sides of every box. Mark fragile boxes clearly on all sides.
Set up a Royal Mail postal redirection at least two weeks before your move date. Compile a list of everyone who needs your new address: bank, GP, DVLA, utility providers, HMRC.
Photograph the gas, electricity and water meter readings at your old home before you leave, and at the new property as soon as you arrive. Send these to your energy suppliers immediately.
Moving day is hectic β it is worth arranging for young children and pets to spend the day with a trusted friend or family member. This keeps them safe and lets the removal team work efficiently.
Do a quick walk around both properties before signing off. Check all rooms, cupboards, the loft and garden of your old home to make sure nothing has been left behind.
If you live on a busy or restricted street, contact your local council ahead of time to arrange a temporary parking suspension for the removal van. Nothing slows a move down more than having nowhere to park.
Try not to fill the diary with other commitments on moving day or the day after. Start with the essentials (kitchen, beds, bathroom) and work through the rest over the first week. Be kind to yourself on the day.
